Welcome to the 31st Annual Woodcarving School and Competition. New this year—Your Class Registration includes a competition piece. That means that your first entry into the competition is FREE! The other pieces will cost $3. We want to see a record number of pieces for our competition this year. You must turn in the competition form with your pre-registration to the school. Also new this year is website pages for each teacher of the school. On the Central Alabama Woodcarving Website, we will place a bio along with pictures from the teachers. This will allow you to see other works that these talented individuals have done.
Also new this year is two new categories in the competition. We have Wood Turning and Stylized. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity to really showcase your projects in these two new categories. The description and rules for these categories can be found in the competition rules.

Fees/ Registration:
Woodcarving Classes: $175
Painting/ Craft Classes: $100
This cost includes instruction and refreshments that are provided in the kitchen.
For registration, please look over our catalog of classes. Double check the level of expertise and the tools that these projects require. The instruction is included in the school fee. The blanks and material that the instructor provide could be extra, and those fees are payable directly to your instructor. By limiting class size, we strive to provide excellence in the learning experience. Please mark the top two classes you would like to take in case the class limit is reached. You will write a 1 by the first option and a 2 by the second option. If a class limit is reached or if a class has to be canceled, SWS reserves the right to place an applicant in his/her second choice. If you choose, SWS will place you on a waiting list for your first choice and notify you if it becomes available before the beginning of the school. SWS will hold your money pending an opening in a class, unless you state otherwise. All classes which do not have adequate students will be canceled on June 15, 2015 unless otherwise noted. To receive a registration confirmation, please include your e-mail address. If you do not use e-mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your school registration.
REFUNDS WILL NOT BE MADE AFTER JUNE 30, 2015.

SWS will try to meet the needs of the students. Please let us know if you have special requirements.
Auction/ Raffle:
We have an Auction on Saturday Evening at 5 pm of donated woodcarvings and other items. The proceeds go back into make the school a success, and your participation is really appreciated. We also have a raffle that follow the end of the auction. Note: We invite you to bring items and/or carvings to the raffle or auction.
Display:
We invite everyone to enter at least one piece in our competition. This is included in the cost of your school registration. If you have other pieces or would not like to participate in the competition, we will have a display table to show other pieces. We will have identification cards to be filled out at the registration table for these pieces.

Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Supply
will be at the show to supply accessories, tools, books, etc. You can also get your tools sharpened for a small fee at the booth. Some of the instructors will also have supplies and tools for sale.
Night Mini-Classes:
There will be some mini-classes on Friday and Saturday evenings. The information, schedule, and sign-up sheets will be at the registration table. These are usually 1 to 2 hours. Students pay the instructor directly for these classes. Reminder: Students are advised to bring portable lighting, extension cords, etc. If you are power carving, a dust collector is required.
Class Descriptions:
Beginning Woodcarving – Mac Proffitt
Learn the basics of carving with Mac. Topics covered: types of wood, woodcarving terms, and tools used, sharpening and keeping tools sharp. Owning a woodcarving supply shop, Mac knows what how the different tools are used. He will teach you how to properly and safely use the tools. A carving project will be done in class including painting.

Scenes on Walking Sticks – Berry Vestal
Berry will be teaching a class on how to carve a low relief scene on the shaft of a walking stick. This year the main subject for the class will be a cowboy themed cane idea. If you have a different idea for the cane, Berry will happy to work with you. You have to speak to him about that idea before the school in order for him to be prepared.
Berry has been carving for approximately 25 years and has taken classes with many well-known carving instructors over the years. He has tried to be his own creative wood carver using a combination of others techniques and enjoying each and every experience.

Blanks: A turned basswood stick approx. 36” long will be provided at a cost of $15.00 each. Berry will also provide blanks for tops prepared to fit these sticks for an additional $6.00 each.
Tools/Supplies: You will need a carving knife, a few palm gouges, and a V-tool to carve the project. A burning tool to do some fine detail work.
Power tools: No power tools needed.
Skill Level: Knife safety and knowledge of sharp knives. You will need some carving experience and creativity.
Pictorial Deep Relief – Randy Walters
Randy is offering a relief scene of a grist mill building including a rock dam and river as the class project. Former students may bring one that has not been completed from a previous class. If you desire to work on a project other than the main project, please contact the instructor at least 30 days prior to class. Blanks are prepared just prior to class. (Contact information will be provided with class registration confirmation.) As in the past, other subjects will be available upon request. Other projects taught in the past are: a locomotive pulling into an old western town, a log cabin with/without a bear, a cabin including a lake, canoe, woods and deer, a barn scene with a windmill, a lighthouse with a cottage and rowboat, an old steam engine train coming out of a tunnel crossing a wooden bridge.
Blanks: Basswood blanks and pattern will be provided for $40.00.
Tools: Students should bring a straight blade carving knife (stop cutting), assorted gouges, mallet, straight edge, large eraser, super glue, wood burner and power tool of choice, a camera and a portable light. (Bring what you normally carve with.)
Power tools: Allowed but must use dust collector. Indicate use of power tools on application.
Skill level: All levels.
Power carve a Buffalo – David Sharp
This year David will be teaching how to carve a realistic Buffalo. The buffalo will be about 8 inches long and in a laying position. Carving the head, achieving the proper anatomy of the body and creating the different fur textures will be what he is focusing on in this class. The buffalo will be painted in realistic colors. David Sharp has been woodcarving since 2007. He loves carving anything realistic. David breaks down how to carve an animal using easy to understand steps. David uses either power or hand tools when doing his carvings. During this class, he will require the use of power tools.

Cottonwood Bark Houses – Ginny Gray-Class is Closed
Whimsical is the magic word and Ginny takes it a new level – no straight lines, no sanding, and no power tools. Ginny has truly mastered this type of carving. She will teach you the essentials to making these fantastic creations.
Ginny lives in Stone Mountain, GA. She began carving in 1995 and after studying with 15 expert carvers between Tennessee and Provo, Utah, decided on relief work as her preference. When she found cottonwood bark and whimsical houses, she found her style. She has taught “BARKING” in Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee. If you have questions, she can be reached at 404-313-4454.
Blanks: Cottonwood bark prices will range between $12.00 and $25.00.
Tools: Knives and gouges, tool list will be provided.
Power tools: PROHIBITED.
Skill Level: Some carving experience. No experience with bark needed.
Optional tools: Magnifying glasses or clip-on magnifier, a small fan (for pulling fumes away), lighting (small table lamp or clip-on flexible light).

Wood Burning – Michele Parsons-Class is Full
The first part of this class will concentrate on grasping the basics of burning with a variable-temperature woodburner, safety, use and care of the different pen nibs, wood choices, how to make corrections, burning with tonal dynamics, color and finishes. The second part of this class will be applying the knowledge. The students will choose a picture from a selection for the class project. Each part of the project will be mastered through a series of instructor demonstration followed by students working on their project with individual instructor feedback.
Michele Parsons is a pyrography instructor and woodcarver from North Carolina. She is an author for Pyrography Magazine. She will be teaching at the 2016 Fox Chapel Publishing Open House in PA this May, Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers School in TN, as well as at the 50th International Woodcarving Congress in IA this June. Tools Required: Enthusiasm and your variable temperature woodburning equipment and pens. Some equipment is available for loan on a first-come basis and equipment will also be available for sale. Other materials will be supplied.

Human Bust – Ken Carter
This class will teach students how to carve a realistic human bust in basswood. The primary focus will be for the carver who wants to learn a more realistic human Bust. This includes how to set up the size of wood you have. Working with that wood to make a carving that has depth, design, and content. This will give your work what we all try to achieve that WOW factor. Project size will be about 14 inches tall. Ken is a past president of Central Alabama Woodcarving Association. He specializes in carving the human form and face. He also chainsaw carves.
Blanks: $35.00 each. There will be extra wood if you wish to work on two projects.
Tools: Regular carving tools. Either palm or full size.
Power tools: Allowed with a dust collector.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Relief Scene or Human Figure – Dylan Goodson
Choose to carve either a landscape relief scene or a human figure in the round. Dylan will have a new relief project that will be an 8.5”x11”x2” thick carving of a log cabin or house in the country. The rough out will be vague enough that you will be able to customize the scene to suit your tastes. Dylan also can show you how to simplify the carving process and create extra depth and texture with paint. You will need to bring your paint brushes prepared for extra work. The human figure is a variation on his Swordsman design. This year the variations are an Old West 7th Cavalry Officer, a Pirate, or a French Musketeer shown. Yellow Warbler – Riley Monroe
Riley has been teaching for many years and is an expert on carving birds. This is the class for anyone that is interested in learning about bird carving. Students almost always leave his class with a finished and painted bird. This is a power carving class so be sure to bring your power tools, and your dust collector. Students will also need to bring something to mount the finished bird on.
Riley’s amazingly life-like birds have won Best of Show honors at carving shows like the Mid-South Woodcarving Show in Huntsville, AL, where Riley lives. He can be reached at 256-881-2544.

Carving Cypress Knees – Carole Jean Boyd-Class is Full
In this class, plan to come and have fun carving spirit face or Santa on a 10 to 14 inch tall cypress knee like those shown in the picture.
You will be doing intense work on the face starting from a roughout. Bring your paint brushes, Carole Jean will supply the paint. You will be using Carole Jean’s painting expertise for finishing your project. You can use either hand tools or power tools or both; which is what Carole Jean does.
Carole Jean has 30 year experience with carving. She has 27 year experience with Photo Art. She combines those two skills to instruct her students in a realistic style face with proper shading. Carole Jean can be contacted at 334-868-9999 or email:

Caricature – Floyd Rhadigan-Class is Full
Floyd Rhadigan will be teaching caricature carving. Floyd has over sixty different rough-outs. These include Santas, Indians, Cowboys, Animals, Mythical, and many more. Floyd will also be brining painting supplies (brushes and paint) along with a sharpening system for use in the class. Come have fun cartooning in wood. Floyd is a Caricature Carvers of America member.
He has been carving since the 1970s. He attributes his style of caricature carving as a combination of Ozark and Flat Plane Scandinavian.

Heraldic American Eagle – Gary McDaniel-Class is Closed
Learn how to carve a high relief sitting eagle like the one show or one very similar to the photo. The size will be approximately 10”x8”x2” thick, in Basswood. Folk Art Painting – Ethel Green / Mary Beck
Ethel and Mary will teach students the art of folk painting on gourds, terra cotta flower pots, wood etc. Students can also bring their own projects. Ethel has been painting for the past 25 years, and she has won Best of Fair for Folk Art for several years at the South Alabama State Fair. Mary has been a painting teacher for many years now, both public and private. She is an expert in acrylic, oil and watercolor on a diverse selection of surfaces such as wood, fabric, gourds, glass, as well as canvas. Both Mary and Ethel traveled to the White House Christmas celebration that was specifically for decorative painters.
