Competition Form and Rules

Southeastern Woodcarving Competition

Information:

Please fill out the competition form and mail it in with your class registration form (deadline June 15th) to receive your free entry in the competition. If you are not registered in the school then the $5 entry fee for the first piece applies. If you wish to sell your carvings indicate that on the competition form. Rules:

1.         The first entry is included with a paid pre-registration into the school. The deadline for the free entry is June 15th.    All other pieces have the entry fee of $3 per carving for the next five carvings.  For a pre-registered student, the cost of 6 or more pieces will be a maximum fee of $15. 

      If you are only entering the competition, the entry fee is $5 for the first piece.  The fee is $3 each additional piece for a maximum fee of $20 for 6 or more pieces. 

                        CAWA will waive the entry fees for any competitor under the age of eighteen.

2.         Anyone, having paid the entry fee(s), can enter the competition.  You do not have to be a member of CAWA, nor do you have to be enrolled for a class in the SWS. Anyone entering the competition that is under the age of eighteen must have a permission slip signed by a parent or legal guardian. Permission slips will be available in advance by request, or at time of carving registration.

3.         Carvings to be entered into the competition must be submitted between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Thursday, July 7th or 7:00-8:00am Friday. Carvings will not be accepted for competition after 8:00 am Friday the 8th of June.

4.            Carvings must remain on exhibit until noon on Sunday.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

5.         The Beginner Division is a carver that has been carving for less than five years and has not won Best of Beginner in a previous SWS competition. Carvers which have won Best of Beginner or that have been carving for longer than five years must enter the Intermediate division. Anyone can enter the Open division, but this is the highest division in the competition.. Professional woodcarvers, carving instructors, and carvers having won Best of Intermediate are required to enter the Open division.

6.         Limited use of non-wood materials will be allowed on woodcarvings (i.e. metal feet, glass eyes), but wood must be the primary material. Non-wood carvings will be placed in the appropriate division/ category.

7.         Carvings entered into the competition must have been completed within the last three years from the date of the competition.

8.            Ribbons from any other show or competition are not to be displayed.

9.            Carvings started and/or finished in a class must be entered into an Instructor Assisted category. 

10.      CAWA reserves the right to assign any carving to the most appropriate category. The registration committee must approve all carvings.

11.          CAWA reserves the right to add, combine or delete competition categories based on the number of entries.

12.      Each “Best of” award will be selected by the judges from among all category first place winners with the exception of the instructor assisted and rough out categories.

13.          The decisions of the judges are final.

 

DEFINITIONS of terms for WOODCARVING

1.            The term “Relief” means a carving of a raised design executed in a manner to decorate a flat surface generally exhibiting an illusion of depth.

2.            The term “In-the-Round” means shaping a free-standing three dimensional form.

3.            The term “Realistic” means work detailed to the extent of closely resembling the real object.

4.            The term “Stylized” means a creation of form but not necessarily the detail.

5.            The term “Caricature” means a distortion or exaggeration of the distinguishing features.

6.            The term “Turned” means work partially or completely turned on a lathe.

7.            The term “Miscellaneous means a carving that does not fit into the other categories.

 

 

 

Open Division

Anyone wishing to compete at the highest level can enter the Open division, professional woodcarvers and carving instructors are required to enter the Open division.

Intermediate Division

Carvers that have won a Best of Beginner award or that have been carving for longer than five years must enter the Intermediate division.

Beginner Division

Only carvers that have been carving for less than five years and have not won a Best of Beginner award in a woodcarving competition can enter the Beginner division.

Prizes and Awards:

 

Open:

Best of Show: $100

Runner Up: $75

 

Intermediate:

Best of Intermediate: $50

 

Beginner:

Best of Beginner: $50

 

Ribbons and $20 will be awarded for First places.  Ribbons will be awarded to Second and Third.

 

 

 

Competition Form

One entry is included with the payment of class registration before June 15th.

This form and payment for the competition may be sent in with your school registration to facilitate registration on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Payments for the competition may be made in the same envelope as your school registration.
